Three top European energy start-ups awarded at Idea Challenge

Out of 479 teams across Europe that have applied for the pan-European competition “Idea Challenge”, 62 addressed the topic of Smart Energy Systems. Easy Smart Grid was part of the 10 best Energy teams coming from France, Germany, Italy and the UK and awarded 3rd place!

The finalists had to pitch their ideas in front of an expert jury of representatives from Siemens AG, Deutsche Telekom AG, Startupbootcamp, High-Tech Gründerfonds, Vattenfall and EIT ICT Labs. The pitches and award ceremony were part of the Smart Energy Community conference in Berlin, a joint event organised by EIT ICT Labs and Telekom Innovation Laboratories with the goal of bringing together industrial players, scientists, public authorities and start-ups, in the field of Smart Energy technologies.

Th e three winning teams are:

- First place, 40,000 €: NNGC from UK. The London based team of academics develops devices that allow the efficient transfer of energy from a wind turbine or renewable generator on to the grid.
- Second place, 25,000 €: ICE Gateway from Germany. The early-stage start-up focuses on intelligent outdoor infrastructure integrating LED lights, sensors, devices, apps & cloud services.
- Third place, 15,000 €: Easy Smart Grid with our easy and robust mechanism to activate all flexibility in mini-grids at lowest cost. Doing so, Easy Smart Grid can raise the share of renewable energy and lower energy prices.

We are proud to provide them not only necessary resources to boost their businesses but also the opportunity to gain international visibility" Beetz added.

In addition to the cash prizes all winners receive six-month office space at one of EIT ICT Labs’ Co-Location-Centres in Europe as well as mentoring and coaching from their Business Development Accelerator. The teams also get integrated into EIT ICT Labs’ large ecosystem and qualify for further initiatives. The teams will be supported with intensive coaching and tightly connected to the local start-up scene.
