Consensus is emerging that a new market design will be necessary to realize a renewable energy based system and achieve the climate goals. Backward-looking regulation of an electricity system rooted early in the last century today is the major bottleneck of progress. At a high level meeting in Brussels, representatives from the Commission as well as industry discussed the third market design package issued in November. Interestingly this new market design calls for variable prices and financial reward for demand response provided by end customers - a requirement well met by the technology platform we develop. This will bring new responsibilities and opportunities for DSOs (distribution system operators), as Easy Smart Grid discussed with the presenter for EURELECTRIC which represents several DSOs in Europe.
