Industry consumes a lot of energy, and flexible consumption is needed to transform our energy systems. However, industry cannot accept that somebody else - such as an energy utility - tampers with its internal processes. It must stay in control of its equipment and installations to guarantee full productivity is maintained. Variable electricity prices that reflect energy availability are a practical and simple way to enable this - and are on the way of being introduced. This stimulated us to design a controller that can interprete them to fully utilize machine flexibility while respecting process constraints.
In cooperation with DFKI, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, and under a grant from EIT Digital, the European Accelerator for Digitization, the development and demo of such a controller - SDSO for "Smart Decentralized Self Optimising" - is being executed.
