Third Forum on Clean Energy for EU Islands, Stockholm

06.06.2019

From 14-16 May 2019, more than 120 representatives from EU island communities and island stakeholders gathered in Stockholm and Mariehamn to exchange experiences on energy transition, as well as learn and discuss new advances of energy technologies and migration models for islands.

The co-hosts from Gotland, Öland, the National Association for the Swedish Archipelago and the National Association of Finnish Islands provided a warm welcome for the participants. Matilda Wärenfalk, Mayor of Mörbylånga Öland, highlighted the urgency which climate change creates, and the importance of having transition strategies. She pointed to the need to accelerate the energy transition and integrate the best solution already today.

The second day featured a technology fair that allowed to discover decarbonisation technologies relevant for clean energy transition of islands, presented by several invited companies. In this setting, Easy Smart Grid presented its cost-efficient approach to demand side integration and smart grid technology, and the status of its practical demonstration. This drew a number of curious participants to its stand, resulting in more detailed exchanges of possible cooperations.

We thank the island secretariat and the other organizers for the invitation and perfect organization. Already we see many opportunities where climate ambitious European islands can move faster to cleaner and cheaper energy. They just need to prepare now not only for the next step of RE deployment, but also further ones for effective fossil replacement.
