One of the most advanced smart grid demonstration projects in Europe has been realized on the Danish island of Bornholm. It is called "Ecogrid" and provides variable end customer electricity prices to mobilize and reward their flexibility. Household machines, electric vehicles or house heating systems can thus help to utilize larger shares of renewables - saving otherwise needed expensive batteries.
