A grid for 100% renewables

Our grids have been optimized to transport electric energy from few large and mostly fossil power plants to the customers. These power plants also could adapt to changing demand and keep the system stable. Future needs, however, are completely different: Thermal plants will mostly be switched off, as fossil energy carriers cause CO2 emissions and those synthetically produced with renewable electricity remain scarce and expensive. Solar- and wind-dependent generation is injected from many decentral plants. On the other hand, substantial demand flexibility exists that will grow quickly as heating and mobility – today responsible for some 2/3 of primary energy use and GHG emissions in Germany – are converted to heat pumps and electric vehicles. Together with many other flexibility sources in industry, infrastructure, business and households they can provide very low cost “virtual batteries”. The energy system can only be called “intelligent” as soon as it utilizes this flexibility efficiently.

An intelligent grid must be transformed by strengthening decentral, cellular structures, and enabling active use of customer flexibility to maintain its capability to mitigate grid congestion, compensate volatile generation, and ensure grid stability. Traditional remote control of customer assets is the last option used only during serious disturbances, while market mechanisms such as dynamic grid fees and energy prices ensure efficient regular operation. Smart use of market mechanisms requires innovative thinking, new processes and technologies, and changes existing roles of grid and market actors. Dynamic tariffs based on Easy Smart Grid technology that also reflect grid physics enable them to continue productive co-operation in the future energy system.

Our offer

Dynamic energy tariffs and grid fees are powerful new tools for grid operators and energy companies. They efficiently provide interfaces between independent actors and solutions to automate complex systems. Completely new options become available by their step-wise introduction and suitable combination, both between themselves and with currently used control concepts and market mechanisms. Their implementation requires suitable know-how, experience and tools which Easy Smart Grid has built up since 2014. Based on this we offer:

  • Development of customer-specific concepts based on dynamic energy tariffs
  • Technologies for validation and implementation (algorithms to generate dynamic price signals as well as to use them for shifting concrete loads)
  • Access to complementary know-how and test environments of our partners
  • Know-how transfer for customer products (licensing, white label)

Your benefits

  • High efficiency and transparency combined with low complexity and cost
  • Scalable in size (from real estate to cellular integrated system) and number of participants (an unlimited number of participants can be coordinated by market mechanisms)
  • Real-time performance ensures system stability and activates flexibility to master any disturbances
  • High degree of data protection and cyber security by optimal use of grid physics that cannot be disturbed or manipulated from outside
  • Easy Smart Grid had been invited to present concrete applications of dynamic tariffs for grid operators at the Grid Services Market Symposium 2020 and presents grid-supportive integration of end customer flexibility by high-resolution spatial and temporal price signals to TSOs and others. „Market design for 100% renewable energy system”

How can we build and operate an energy system based on renewables at lowest cost, yet at highest efficiency and resilience? Having developed and built it at small scale, we described how to transfer it to the system level. Starting with the changing requirements of generating and consuming assets, and the more decentralized architecture, the desirable evolution of market design has been developed. This article was published in April 2022 in “Energiewirtschaftliche Tagesfragen”, a German industry reference discussing current challenges of the energy industry.

Award: “Good Practice of the Year 2021”

The “Renewable Grid Initiative” promotes the international collaboration of grid operators and environmental organisations to stimulate progress towards 100% renewable energy. It regularly identifies the “Good Practice of the Year” in three categories. In 2021, the jury consisting of highly renowned members from industry, research and administrations picked our real-world demo implementation SoLAR Allensbach as the winner in the category “Technological Innovation & System Integration”. Jean-Michel Glachant, director for energy at the “Florence School of Regulation” and the jury member presenting its judgement, emphasized that “this project puts all the pieces together to create a grid flexibility package in order to meet the challenge of integrating more renewables”.
